Sunhillo's TDM to IP solutions span across multiple industries including:

FAA | DoD

.

Power Utilities

Telecom

Industrial

Many systems, including the FAA, depend on TDM-based services provided by telecom carriers (approx. 21,000 services – many using T1 Line connectivity). TDM services will phased out and migrated to IP over the next few years. The TDM services used in the FAA NAS include voice, surveillance, weather, maintenance systems, and inter-facility / flight data a list that encompasses nearly the entire NAS.

Sunhillo’s Solution minimizes risk and provides a TDM to IP solution to meet the FAA’s needs as well as other industries like Power Utilities & Telecom that are transitioning from TDM leased lines. Using Sunhillo’s TDM to IP products like the RICI Gateway, Asbury, Ventnor Concentrator, and LITE Software Suite will help ease the transition and provide a safe, reliable solution.

Sunhillo’s TDM to IP solutions include:

  • FAA FTI TDM Gateway
    • Sunhillo TDM to IP products are FENS enabled
  • Bridge HDLC lines over Ethernet
    • Extend the life of legacy equipment without the use and cost of TDM leased lines
  • Synchronous Serial to IP Conversion
    • Plug and play conversion with Power over Serial or Power over Ethernet using the Asbury
  • ASYNC or HDLC to CMHP, SWIM, Active MQ
    • Multiple formats supported

FAA TDM to IP (CASS Devices)

Sunhillo’s products have been widely deployed to support the FAA’s TDM to IP Migration.  Labeled FAA CASS Devices, the Sunhillo RICI Gateway’s are utilized across the program.

With a core competency in IP and serial networks, data protocols, and a strong understanding of the FAA network Sunhillo embarked on developing its first RICI Gateway (known throughout the FAA as the Conversion Appliance System Service, CASS) product in the 2015/16 timeframe. The approach taken by Sunhillo was not to think of a single program when developing this solution but instead to factor in a variety of FAA programs and provide the means to translate the legacy protocols being used by them to an IP-centric environment for transport over IP. This approach enables the FAA to eliminate the dependence on legacy leased TDM lines and modems allowing a move to an IP network for transporting data.

The TDM to IP Gateway functionality the CASS provides is currently being leveraged by several programs within the FAA and can be utilized by many other FAA programs. Also, if required, the CASS provides the ability to interact with the FAA Remote Monitoring Logging System (RMLS) for systems requiring monitoring through the RMLS program. The flexibility in the approach taken by the CASS has proven to be costeffective for several FAA programs that are already using it as both a TDM to IP Gateway and as an IP-enabling Monitoring Device for RMLS. With its ability to support a broad range of needs/programs Sunhillo’s CASS can be leveraged by the FAA to allow multiple programs to use the same solution platform as it supports multiple connections at the same time, thus reducing cost by eliminating the need to develop single-use solutions for each program.

Sunhillo's FAA TDM to IP Featured Products (FAA CASS Devices)

Sunhillo’s Real-Time Interface & Conversion Item (RICI) Gateway has been specifically designed to address the needs associated with the elimination of leased TDM lines. As such, the product comes equipped with a suite of built in user configurable options that allows the user to configure the RICI Gateway for their required needs depending on where they are in the migration path relative to the elimination of leased TDM lines or as commonly referred to Sun Setting on TDM.

The Ventnor Concentrator is intended to interface to a number of different devices such as NAV Aid Devices (VOR, RVR, ALS…), Weather Sensors (ASOS/AWOS), and Radar Flight Data Equipment. The Ventnor Concentrator supports up to 16 serial ports. Additionally, the Ventnor Concentrator has been designed to provide a CMHP RMLS connection that provides monitoring of the Ventnor Concentrator hardware, and individual channel configuration and status.

As part of the TDM to IP initiative, there has been a move to transition serial communication circuits to IP circuits. Sunhillo’s Legacy Interface Test Equipment (LITE) has been specifically designed to provide a platform for testing FAA Legacy serial interfaces and providing an environment to help in the transition from TDM to IP. The LITE is a fully configurable simulation tool.

Sunhillo's TDM to IP Solutions for Power Utilities and Telecom

Sunhillo developed the Asbury specifically for sustaining legacy equipment by eliminating the need for costly serial and TDM lines

Utilities & Telecom Concept of Operations

Specifically for the Utilities and Telecom industry, the Asbury has been successfully tested in a power utility environment with a SEL Relay in a point to point Carrier Grade Network with a total combined delay of 36 milliseconds.  Protection Relaying Applications include:

  • Breaker Failure
  • Direct Transfer Trip Signals (DTT)
  • Permissive Overreaching Traffic Trip (POTT)
  • *SEL Mirrored Bits Supported
  • PoE or Power over Serial

The Asbury solves your data connection needs moving from expensive and outdated Serial and TDM lines to cost effective Ethernet networks. The Asbury product is a compact, low cost, single-channel serial to ethernet conversion device ideally suited for Legacy Serial/TDM lines moving to IP applications. It is contained in a form factor that allows it to be attached in-line to a device or cable with a male DB-25 connector, and an RJ45 connection on the opposite side for LAN.
